The Closest Place to Mars - Wadi Rum
Want to go to Mars without leaving Earth? You must think I’m totally nuts to suggest that! And no, I am not talking about a simulation or a virtual experience. You can visit the most Mars-like place on planet Earth at Wadi Rum in the beautiful country of Jordan. A paradise for adventurers. A haven for Mars enthusiasts. A lifetime experience for thrill-seekers. Call it what you will– but missing out on Wadi Rum isn’t an option.
Mars on Earth
The red and brown mesas and peaks are housed in a seemingly limitless sea of sand and sparse vegetation. The landscape of mountains and dunes, known as the Valley of the Moon is mostly uninhabited. It’s a unique landscape of granite and sandstone formed by the shifting of ancient tectonic plates. Experience Adventurous hiking trails, camping under the stars or sleeping in Martian-like Domes.
A Dramatic Martian Experience!
Want to feel as if you have landed on the Red Planet? Check out the futuristic Martian Domes at Sun City Camp. They were inspired by Ridley Scott's Oscar-nominated 2015 film "The Martian".
The Spaceship-like geodesic domes are custom-made in Germany with glass walls that offer breathtaking views of the desert and surrounding mountains. They accommodate up to 4 people per dome, each unit is equipped with luxury bedding, carpets, air conditioning, spacious bathroom with shower, and private terrace.
A one-night stay sets you back for around $200, which goes up if you opt for breakfast and dinner.
Sleeping under the Stars
If you want to be even more connected to Mother Nature, this is an amazing experience you shouldn’t miss out on! Nomadic Bedouin tribes passing through Wadi Rum have been expert star navigators. They have used the position of the moon and stars in relation to their surroundings to determine the path ahead. For instance, the North Star has been frequently used as a celestial navigational tool in the desert. Stargazing is one of the most popular activities here. You can rent tents and sleep right under the stars and witness spectacular views of the night sky. Locals like to share fascinating stores from the distant past during the extraordinary nightly sky-gazing sessions in the Wadi Rum desert.
Depending upon the season, you can spot a plethora of planets and constellations. There is no pollution in the desert, so you are able to see a clear view of an amazing part of the Milky Way Galaxy! The sights are reminiscent of Van Gogh’s iconic painting – Starry Night!
